Correspondence of Jefferson Martenet, 1837-1892.

The collection conists of letters which reflect life and events in San Francisco, chiefly during the years 1854-70. The correspondence in the collection is between Jefferson Martenet and his mother, Catherine M. Richardson, in Baltimore, Ohio, and with Simon J. Martenet, a Baltimore surveyor and civil engineer. Some of the letters also discuss the U.S. Civil War.

Jefferson Martenet, emigrant to the California mines in 1852, spent about two years in Jacksonville, then went to San Francisco where he opened a book stand in 1855. He became a clerk in 1857 in the Antiquarian Bookstore, owned by his friends Epes Ellery and Augustus Doyle. From 1866 to 1867, Martenet was associated with Dr. T.W.
